Editors Manchester Academy 22.10.2015
Firstly I apologise for the ridiculous delay in getting this blog out to you its a busy time for me now , so normal service resumes..
Its been 2 years since I last seen 'Birmingham's brooding Indie Scensters 'Editors', already at 3.30pm the soundcheck is sounding really very exciting I've had a sneak peak of whats on tonight's menu and it sounds really promising!!
At 7.30pm 'Glasgow' support band 'Twilight Sad' enter the stage, I was Impressed with at 'Truck Festival' last year , tonight they take to the stage more confident than their previous daytime slot, they are definitely a band that work better in the dark for the raw emotion and heart thumping anthems with uber serious singer 'James Graham' providing more drama than an episode of 'Jekyll & Hyde' and taking much of his rockstar tuition from the pages of 'Ian Curtis's Handbook Of Drama & Despair' beginning with 'Theres A Girl Round The Corner' from their debut album 'Nobody Wants To Be Here, But Nobody Wants To Leave' .
At times 'James' looks like he's left the oven on at home and he just realised it panicking and thumping at his head, thumping his chest in despair I became transfixed with the passion of the band, next song I knew of was 'I Became A Prostitute' which he introduces as 'Prossy' if you like either 'Joy Division' or 'Glasvegas' you'll love 'Twilight Sad' it got the gig off to an atmospheric start.
9pm & the stage is set for the main band to begin, as 'Editors' walk on stage they are greeted with rapturous applause before they even begin the new single 'No Harm' taken from their brand new album 'In Dream' , Lead singer 'Tom' wears a crisp White Shirt and skinny black jeans he still has those trademark sideburns, the next track to be played for us was the amazing 'Sugar' from their last album 'Weight Of Your Love' and it 's sheer theatrical bonkers -ness from the start (Helllooo #JazzHands ha lol private joke... you had to be there) a few new songs and the back to the no nonsense Indie as they do what they do best with tracks from their earlier albums notably 'Back Room', 'End Has A Start' and 'Blood' "All Sparks' getting the crowd bouncing now and 'End Has A Start prompting a singalong on the front rows followed by one of my fav all time #Editors album songs 'Eat Raw Meat=Blood Drool' you have to hear it to believe it and sounds just fantastic live.
'Tom' looks very humbled by the 'Manchester' welcome, 'Russell' the bands bass player is giving the front row the thumbs up (Its worth mentioning if you don't know that 'Tom' and 'Russell' are the only 2 original members of the 4, there have been line up changes in 2012 with the addition of 'Justin') . It's Piano time and 'Racing Rats' then a poigniant version of 'Smokers Outside The Hospital Doors' played by 'Tom' acoustically, for some of the more electic tracks 'Tom' at times gets into an alien insect mode contorting into different shapes, in fact he dances and moves like no one I know and you don't realise until you watch them on stage how captivating it all is.
Up next 'Munich' and Whoa !! the place is bouncing now, it still sounds amazing live like it did in 2005 when 'Editors' were taking the NME crowd by storm, and now up to the Encore 'Papillion' with 'Tom' jumping up and down in front on the keyboard set above the amp #ItKicksLikeASleepTwitch!! the crowd go crazy bouncing in time to the synths, in a surprising decision not to end on that but instead finishing on 'Marching Orders' it was another successful show for the band to end their UK tour on !!, I have to say ,I never tire of their sound Editors are a band for Past,Present and Future from tonights performance 'Epic' Show, Superb Atmosphere, Great Crowd Tonight!
Til the next time with a blog including 2 special tour reports of 80's nostalgia and and Icon hmm got you guessing now :0)
