Muse Summer Stadiums Tour 2013 Opening Night Coventry Ricoh Arena 22/05/13
Its finally here the show of the year we have all been waiting for .
This report contains some spoilers, so do not read if you are going to the show next Saturday or over in Europe you have been warned.
This is my 16th Muse show I can hardly believe it, I supported them before it became 'Cool' to.
Today is a bright sunny day in phases, I am no 33 in the queue (Once I was was No1 :0( but no matter.)
There are a few of us there that are familiar that I know or should I say that used to know me ,I can't recall much of the Muse days or the fans but they remember me its like a big reunion atmosphere there is 'Lady Muse' in me still ,hiding away waiting to pounce , crazy days.
The doors open at 5pm and Sun is out,to get into the stadium there are are flight of glass stairs made of glass which at the moment we are sat on, that all changed at 12.30pm when we were told to move down to floor and stand in line huh just like school days eh folks.
I had seen this one coming I know the drill be prepared for anything, our queuing system nearly went out the window , by 4.30pm we were being wristbanded to go in, people were pushing and shoving I was glad I was at the front holding my arm aloft praying for dear life these last few minutes waiting to get through ..agony .
I bolted it up the stairs was directed through the building to the next flight of stairs in the stadium itself I shuffled quickly down swearing under my breath not even glancing up to see where I was until I knew I couldn't fall I don't know what worried me the most falling and not getting there or missing a place in front at the barrier falling would've got me there quicker ha, I could see the huge runway and main stage area and headed out to my right to watch the show mid way down the runway I bagged good spot .
Taking in the surroundings the stage set up looked awesome I cant describe how awesome it was but will try it was basically a huge factory power plant with four chimineys, a drumkit centre stage hidden behind greenhouse like plastic covering ,speakers and amps about the stage.
First band went onstage at around 6pm 'Bastille',I quite like them their singles are catchy, the band look very much dwarved by Muse's HUGE stage, but they manage a great energetic performance to an appreciative audience but basically they were all there to watch one band only really.
They played 'Pompeii' and new single 'Laura Palmer' and also another fav track 'Flaws' singer 'Dan Smith' wanders about the stage doing his dances and not really having much room to move, he occasionally has a drumstick in his hand which he uses on the drum machine to the left of him his hair is looking a bit frizzy today the quiff a little out of control, but they are refreshing to see he doesn't speak much think this their biggest audience they are a relatively new band from London.
Tonight is not quite sold out there are empty seats but it didn't seem to matter the second act onstage however is no stranger to the Festival and Stadium gigs game and know's how to warm up a crowd, none other than London Rapper 'Dizzee Rascal' he has an incredible knack of offending people and entertaining them at the same time, he leaps onto the stage in Red t-shirt and knee length shorts and his trademark cap with his crew on decks and some guest rappers.
He welcomes us by swearing quite a bit and begins some people are excited others stand motionless he plays 'Bassline Junkie' and 'Money' and some more old skool classics like 'Fix Up Look Sharp' already full of bad language in his lyrics he shouts to us "Fxxking come on Coventry lets see some hands up in the air and get bouncing" he goes in the next rap "When I say Dizzee you say Rascal Dizzee ..Rascal Dizzee Rascal" he's definitely psyching us up he plays 'Dance wit Me',Holiday' and finally 'Bonkers' he was ok if a little potty mouthed and loud.
By 8.30pm it wasn't quite dark but already time had come for our rock band from Devon to take to the stage for a promising phenominal show the smoke billowed and lights came alive ,the band walked on to an intro and 'Dom' took to his drumkit 'Chris' stood to the right with freshly shaven head, Matt walked on to a huge cheer, he wore a White on Black striped jacket and Red Trousers and began 'Supremacy' his trademark Manson Guitar under the lights gasps all around .
'Matt's trademark rock posing in full swing, the show began flames rose out of the four chimneys and a huge bolt of fire shot out from the bottom of the stage this was only the beginning boy that was hot I thought a flame thrower was at my cheek.
The crowd go nuts I go nuts, its the most awesome sight its almost like the stage show 'Pink Floyd' wanted to stage but better much better, the colours and effects on the factory with the factory pipes and the huge screens they played images and the dancing world leader cartoons such irony during 'Panic Station', then later 'New Born'.
And then 'Resistance' to which 'Matt' walks down the runway for the first time away from the main stage past me and singing to the crowd ,'Chris' moves onto the runway later on becoming a big part of the show, its the most personal show I've ever seen purely a huge thak you to us all for supporting them all these years ,the crowd can't believe how close everything is and don't believe eyes and ears more surprises to come and an airing of 'Deadstar' not heard since 2004 in Earls Court this is a hard core fan favourite.
There is a superb spectacle of Muse cash flying in the air landing everywhere 'Musos' fans collect these from the shows now,'Matt' speaks to the crowd 'How you doing Coventry! he smiles and waves at people as he passes by this way and that during the songs a girl next to me has a huge white sheet with Muse 'Muscle Museum' on it she is trying to get 'Matt's attention after a song end as he is turning around I grab it with her a create a noise it works he turns around puzzled curious clocks the sign stares mutters and walks off again to the main stage.
In a very rare moment 'Matt' and 'Chris' stand on the runway and 'Matt' stops right opposite me and sings a classic 'Unintended' I used to dream of this moment, there he was right over me singing the words and strangely I was singing all the words back to him he scarcely moved from that spot just stood there it was surreal and a beautiful moment got quite emotional.
Another classic album track not telling you what ..from 'Absolution' that hadn't been played in a while was host to a giant Human Light bulb passing by us the light bulb looked very real and the dancer inside was above my head pirrouetting out of it, it looked amazing I honestly could not have picked the better spot it was halfway through coming up to Encore time.
'Matt' has a slight wardrobe change in favour of Red shirt and Black jeans, and 'Uprising' is quite an interesting moment when on the screen lots of multiple 'Dom's drum in time to the anthemic music and Matt stabs his fist in the the air crowd are going mad jumping up and down.
Then the moment everyone had heard about and 2nd Law track 'Unsustainable' with the HUGE Robot he was a lovely sight parading about the main stage flashing red eyes the band now themselves dwarved by the stage effects Awesome sight and the flames were still coming from the chimneys until meltdown scene and the show winds down, the band also played the arena favourite 'Undisclosed Desires' and on this occaision it's not only 'Matt' walks by says hello to the fans and shakes hands it was superb surprise especially for those who didn't attended the Arena shows of last year not expecting it.
The band played for over 2 hrs so I can't possibly tell you people everything that went on although I have tried to give the insight ino the whole show I hope you get the idea as the band had a very ambitious stage set up you have to see it to believe it all really I cut some spoilers out in the end, this was the best Muse show I've ever seen and best gig I've seen in my life ever, Muse are the best band in the U.K. today and they so modest they don't know it but they Rock !!
Taking a break til summer as following on the tour next week, the photos if I get any from the gigs will be posted in the galleries and links posted when ready so stay tuned.
Oh and See you at the next gig Musers!!
